OOS Weekly Clean Up

A little care, every week. ♻️⛰️

OOS founder Lois Hong spend much of her life travelling between the Southern Alps and the Himalayas, filming in the mountains and working on mountain clean-up projects.

When she's back in New Zealand, she calls Hāwea home — a peaceful little place near Wānaka, surrounded by beautiful mountains, big and small, with countless walking tracks to explore.

New Zealand's mountains are generally incredibly clean, but over the years, we've started noticing more rubbish along the trails than we used to. The Wānaka and Queenstown region is home to some of New Zealand's most popular hiking destinations, welcoming thousands of visitors who come to experience the beauty of these mountains. And unfortunately, little things sometimes get left behind.

So whenever Hong is home in Hāwea, we try to head out to a local mountain or walking track once a week, with one simple purpose:

Walk up. Pick up rubbish. Carry it down.

And now, we'd love to invite you to join us!

Our weekly clean-up hikes are open to anyone who'd like to come along. There's no fee, no complicated commitment, and no previous clean-up experience needed. Just get in touch with us beforehand to register, and we'll let you know when and where the next clean-up hike will take place.

OOS will provide rubbish pickers, gloves, and other clean-up equipment. All you need to do is dress appropriately for the outdoors, wear suitable footwear, and bring enough water and anything else you'd normally take on a hike.

You don't have to clean up an entire mountain to make a difference. A little care from each of us can go a long way.

Come walk with us. Meet some people. Spend some time in the mountains. Pick up what doesn’t belong. And leave our mountains a little cleaner than we found it.
