An Easy Guide to 168 Hours a Week
Have you ever said, “There’s just not enough time!”? Well, here’s a little secret: Every single person has exactly 168 hours in a week. That includes students, teachers, business owners - even Jay Zhou and Elon Musk!
So the real question is: How do we choose to spend those hours?
🎯 What Is the 168-Hour Rule?
There are 7 days in a week. 24 hours in a day × 7 days = 168 hours. Hong once made a spreadsheet to help her students see how they really spend those hours - and how they might change things to fit in the stuff they really want to do.
😴 Where Does the Time Go?
Here’s what the average person spends time on each week:
Sleep: ~56 hours (8 hours per night)
Work or school: ~40–50 hours
Eating & cooking: ~12 hours
Chores: ~6 hours
Fitness: ~2.5 hours
TV, social media, and fun: ~30 hours (!)
Family & friends: ~4–6 hours
That’s already more than 160 hours… and we haven’t added hobbies, learning, or side projects yet!
💡 So… How Do You Make Time?
Here’s what we discovered:
Track your time. - Just knowing where your time goes is powerful. Try writing down how you spend a day or week.
Make small sacrifices. - If you spend 3 hours a day on your phone, what if you cut that to 1 hour and used the other 2 for drawing, building something, learning guitar - or anything you love?
Double dip! - Listen to audiobooks or podcasts while doing chores or walking. That’s two uses for the same time!
Be kind to yourself. - It’s okay if you can’t “do everything.” Many people struggle with time! You just need to pick what matters most.
🧭 You Get to Choose
You don’t have to do what everyone else does. You get to decide: Do I want to scroll, or create? Do I want to binge shows, or build a dream?
Your 168 hours are like puzzle pieces. You can move them around. And with practice, you’ll figure out how to fit in the things that make your life meaningful, fun, and truly yours.
