How to Achieve Big Dreams

Updated: Jul 4

Have you ever looked at a huge goal - like becoming a professional artist, starting a business, or writing a book - and thought, “That’s way too big. I don’t even know where to start”?

Here’s the truth: No one eats an entire airplane in one bite. But strangely enough, someone has actually eaten a whole airplane - by grinding it into powder and eating a little bit at a time.

This idea is called chunking. It means breaking down big tasks into smaller, manageable steps. It’s the secret behind how people accomplish amazing things, like building companies or becoming Olympic athletes.

Why Big Goals Can Feel Overwhelming

Today, we live in a world full of instant rewards.

Post a picture - get likes.

Send a message - get replies right away.

But life’s biggest goals don’t work like that. They take time, patience, and daily effort.

If you’re used to quick results, you might feel frustrated when you work hard but don’t see success immediately. That’s why chunking is so powerful: it helps you stay on track without getting overwhelmed.

The 5-Step Chunking Method

  1. Start with the Big Picture

Ask yourself: What do I want in 5 or 10 years? Maybe you want to be a famous filmmaker, a successful entrepreneur, or a scientist. Write it down.

  2. Break It Down by Year

If that’s your 10-year goal, what would be a good milestone to hit this year?

  3. Break It Down by Month and Week

Now ask: What can I do this month to move closer? What does that mean for this week?

  4. Plan Each Day

Each morning, focus on one step. Just one. Don’t think about the mountain—just take the next step.

  5. Stay Realistic

Don’t expect to master a new skill in a week. Even professional athletes train for years. The key is to practice a little every day.

Keep Your Eyes on Your Boots

Mountain climbers have a saying: “Don’t stare at the summit - watch your boots.” If you keep looking up at how far you have to go, you’ll feel tired and discouraged. But if you focus on each step, you’ll eventually get there.

So when you feel overwhelmed, don’t give up. Instead, chunk your goal into smaller steps and keep moving. You don’t have to figure it all out at once. Just know your next step - and take it.

That’s how dreams are built: one step at a time.

(Chunking)
